"Medicine is the art of rubbing" - Hippocrates, the 'Father' of Western medicine

Tui Na (push - grasp) is a form of Chinese Therapeutic Bodywork, that comes in many variations. It is widely considered one of the oldest forms of healing treatment in the world.
Tui-Na Bodywork is an integral part of Chinese Physical Medicine, often used in conjunction with acupuncture, it is a hands-on body treatment that uses Chinese medical and Daoist principles in an effort to bring the "eight functions" into balance and aiding the bodies return to homeostasis.

At Tian-Yi the term is used as an umbrella term to cover several types of Chinese Bodywork;
- Tui Na (推拿) which focuses on manipulation of the neuro-muscular system.
- Zhi Ya (指壓) which focuses on holding, pressing and manipulation of acupressure points.
- Zheng Gu (正骨) which focuses upon correcting the function and alignment of the skeletal system.
- An Mo (按摩) which focuses on the massage of the soft-tissues.
Our Tui-Na Bodywork is drawn from three medical traditions. These lineages all have a "qi first, strength second" approach, with an emphasis on the direct and indirect manipulation of qi via the body. Tui-Na Bodywork uses a wide variety of hand methods across a spectrum that ranges from hands on and vigorous (yang) to increasingly more subtle hands on methods (yin). These are all utilised within the approach of aiding the various systems of the body to re-find a state of 'balance' promoting well-being.
Whether it is working on the musculo-skeletal system, relieving muscle and joint aches, pains, sprains and injuries, or working deeper into the circulatory systems and internal organs, improving blood flow and health. The practitioner may work the soft tissue areas between each of the joints, known as the eight gates, in attempt to improve circulation of blood and qi. They may also use range of motion, traction, rocking and massage, with the stimulation of acupressure points.
Tui-Na Bodywork can be used to treat or complement the treatment of many conditions including acute and chronic musculo-skeletal conditions, pain disorders and chronic stress-related disorders.
Tui-Na Bodywork is not used for conditions involving compound fractures and external wounds and would also not be performed on the abdominal portion of a woman during menstruation or pregnancy.

Relieving Musculo-Skeletal Pain and Discomfort
The most common use of Tui-Na Bodywork today is in relieving pain and discomfort found in the musculoskeletal system. Whether acute from a recent injury, or longer standing and chronic. Bodywork can help the body heal itself. Utilising point pressing, joint rotation, opening and lengthening the soft tissues all help to dissipate tension, calm the nerves, release stuck tissues, and lubricate joints. Which will help to improve the ease with which the body can move and be moved. Unique hand methods move the qi, blood, and lymph in the body improving circulation and preventing stagnation.
Tui-Na Bodywork is generally received fully clothed unless an injury needs examination. Oils simply as lubricants are not used, although some medicinal oils or linaments may be applied to aid in the healing process.
